Toward the Terra was first created by Keiko Takemiya in 1977 and ran till 1980. It won the very first Seiun Award for manga. In 1980, an anime movie was made. In 2007 the manga was adapted into an anime series.
The story takes place in the distant future after the 31st millennium. Every aspect of humanity is controlled by a supercomputer know as Superior Dominance (SD) and a small group of selective humans known as the Members Elite. Centuries before the earth was destroyed by war and pollution. Humans left earth so that it could heal it's self. Humans colonized distant planets and systems to live in.
Under SD all humans are now born artificially in labs and given to selected parents. When children turn 14, they are put through brainwashing and all memories are wiped and overwritten, so they can become functional adults. As a result of this there is an advanced race of humans with psionic abilities called Mu, the supercomputers at SD do every thing in their powers to eliminate them. The Mu are lead by Soldier Blue and then later Soldier Shin, the Mu do their best to find every Mu child and save it before SD can eliminate them. The only wish the Mu have is to return to their promised land of Tarra or Earth. The series spans over many years fallowing the lives of Soldier Shin and the Mu, and Keith and the humans. And how their lives effect each other.
First off the weeping mouse is the cutest anime creature. He's just adorable and since he always looks like he's about to cry, he just gets cuter.
The rest of the series is very much a drama. The way that both parties, the Mu and humans, have a very strong fear and hatred of each other is all because they became a threat to SD and the supercomputers. But, since they were computers they couldn't go out side of their programming and couldn't stop them from born. All of humanity has two things in common, the hatred of the Mu and the want to go to Terra. The hatred if so strong that Jomy (Solider Shin) hates and fears all the Mu when he first comes to them. Even though they saved him and they are kind to him. Also, Johan is in so much denial that he is not a Mu, even when he contently uses his powers around Keith. He never accepts that he is a Mu. This hatred is what keeps them together and the hope that they will get to go to Terra makes them behave and do as SD tells them.
The best thing about this series is the audience gets to see every side of the story. The main characters Jomy and Keith are at the opposite ends of the war. Each becoming the leaders of their sides. As the audience we get to see how the Mu have suffered and why they fear the humans so much and their will and want to survive. But, we also get to see why they were eliminated on the human's side and how they humans feel about being reprogrammed over and over again. Neither is good or bad. There is bad and good on both sides. And this is how war is each side believes that they are in the right. In the end there is massive character growth from Keith who started out with on free will and would do anything Mother Eliza would tell him, in the end only wants peace for the humans and the Mu.
This series is wonderful. The manga is great so is the later anime series, the weakest out of all three is the movie. The movie is still good but not as good as the other two.
Next week I'm doing Vampire Princess Miyu.
