Choro Crusade was created by Daisuke Moriyama. It ran from 1998 to 2004 consisting of eight volumes. There was a typo in the original logo, that made the title Chrno Crusade, but was fixed with later releases. There is an anime that spans 24 episodes and like so many other anime before it, half way through the story complete changes.
The fictional organization, The Magdalene Order, exists to fight the demonic threats that appear with more and more regularity across America. The story fallows Rosette Christopher, a nun and exorcist of the Order, and Chrono, her soul bound demon partner. It is revealed through out the story, both Rosette and Chrono have a shadowy past that drives them in there search. They are searching for Rosette's brother, who was taken from her and Chrono by The Sinner Aion, who has a past with Chrono. Aion's only goal is to destroy the demon hierarchy.
The beginning of the manga is a little slow and a bit childish. There isn't any growth or development. It's just Chrono and Rosette running around causing trouble. But, that doesn't last to long. Once you get through half of the first manga it starts getting darker and more adult. The best thing about this manga is that even though the characters are in adult situations and deal with very dark elements, there is never a point when you think "oh children should not read this." None of these adult situations are sexual or inappropriate. Moyiyama still keeps humor in there but it realistic to the characters and the situations. At no point is there humor during an intense serious scene. All the characters have to deal with there own personal challenges. They have to look at them selves and their past mistakes, and have to live up to those mistakes and the choices that they've made them selves. They have to face their fears and did things that they don't want to do. They have to over come their own personal fears that are holding them back, all of their the fears are personal and emotional. It's also very realist and rational fears. Their pasts have shaped them and that is what happens in real life.
Azmaria, fears that she will always be alone and that all the people around her will die, because every one keeps dying around her. She has to over come that to use her power as an apostle and help Chrono and Rosette. Joshusa has to over come his fear of not being in control. He was using Chrono's horns as crunch and everyone around him encouraged it. He literally had to pull them off his head to save his sister, Chrono, and the world. Rosette had to realize that you can't run and fight alone. In order to keep fighting you need other people you can't just depend on your self. She has the chance to go to Joshusa by her self, thing she has wanted for five years, but she gives it up to save other people. She doesn't want to be perfectly fine but by her self, she want to be with other people even if it means she'll get hurt along the way. Chrono has to over come the fear of killing some one he loves. He has to over come his past. It's just weighing him down and he's so scared that it'll happen again. All the things that happen you can see it's weight on all the characters and how it changes them. Either for the good or for the bad, but every event changes them.
The art in this manga is wonderful. All the human characters are very traditional anime and manga style. Very well drawn but nothing overly amazing. Then you get to the demons. Every thing to weird twisted flesh demons to Pandemonium is beautiful. The differences between all the demons is wonderful at no point would you think the artist coped out and just started to copy past bad guys. Since it is an alternate history, the outfits are different then a normal 20's attire. But, they aren't to different that it makes you scratch you head and think how did that get there. All the clothes fit the time that they are fit for the alternate history that the story created.
This manga is wonderful, once you get through the first few chapters, but bare with it because what comes after those first few chapters is well worth the wait.
