A Look at Manga- Inuyasha

Inuyasha, also know as Inuyasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale, was created by Rumiko Takahshi. It was first published in 1996 and ran for 12 years till 2008. It spawned two anime, four movies, multiple video games, and two live actions (a play and a Chinese tv series).
The series follows Kagome Higurashi, 15 year old girl form Tokyo, who is transported to the Sengoku period after falling into a well at her family's shrine. There she meets the half demon Inuyasha. When a monster tries to take the magical Shikon Jewel embodied in Kagome, she accidentally shatters the Jewel into many pieces that are then dispersed across Japan. Inuyasha and Kagome start traveling to recover it before the powerful demon Naraku finds all the shards. Inuyasha and Kagome gain several allies during their journey, they are Shippo, Miroku, Sango, and Kirara.
I like all the demons in this story. I've always like fantasy and monsters so this was a great manga for me because it had so many different demons in it. Also, I love different cultures. In Asian counties, there are so many different monsters then we have here in the US. This is the same for any country or reigns that you go to. The stories are all different and that's awesome.
There are two things I don't like about this series. One there is little or no character development. Inuyasha is better at talking with Kagome but besides that there is really no charater development. Unless you count them falling for each other, but that is used more as plot then development. the rest of the characters don't change much. Their personalities stay the same the whole way through the manga. The only thing that changes is their relationship status. Such as Miroku and Sango end up getting married and having children, but they didn't change. The only thing that might be considered character growth would be instead of trying to kill Inuyasha they work with him. But, I would say that's again more for story and not much growth for said characters. Yes, they do change a bit that is only to again fit with their new relationships, Inuyasha and Kagome, instead of all ways fighting and their personalities clashing they work together and love each other.
Kagome has the same characteristics and personality that she does at the beginning of the manga as the end. I will have to say that Inuyasha does change, a little bit but a change, he no longer distrusts humans. There is growth there, but it's more like he had to do that to get what he wanted and to survie. At no point the manga is there a scene where a charater is like "this is what happened and I need to fix that". The development is slow and long, if at all, and very minor.
The other thing that I did not like about this manga is it is long, over 550 chapters. I didn't have a problem with the length, I had a problem with the story. It was the same all the way through the whole manga. They set out to find the Shikon Jewel and they find all of it at the end of the story. Yea, a lot of stuff happens in the middle but most of that has nothing to do with the main story. It was almost as if when they got to close to putting the Jewel all together Rumiko Takahshi was like, nope I want to write more they lose the Jewel or they have to fight this thing or an other.
Besides that I do enjoy reading this manga. If you are not looking for any depth but would like a good action manga with a tiny sprinkle of romance then this is the manga for you. It is long but it never stops giving you fight scenes and fun monsters.
Next week I'll be doing Chrono Crusade.
