Movie Night- Tsumiki no Ie

I watched a short film this time. Tsumiki no Ie, or The House of Small Cubes, was made in 2008. It was created by Kunio Kato and the music was by Kenji Kondo. It won multiple prizes and and awards that year, including an Oscar.
The art style is different from anything that I have seen. It isn't anime like you know it, it isn't american animation either, it is it's own thing. I can really get behind something that is different. Especially if that something is done so well.
There is no dialog in this movie. The story is completely told visually and with music.
The main character, an old man, is constantly just building up his house, on top of the old one, when the water, that is always rising, rises to high. He is just going through is life not really thinking about it. Then when he loses his pipe, not being able to find a good replacement, goes to find it. He sees his life again this time back wards. It is the most touching thing I've seen in a long time. That happens though when you go to an old place that you haven't been for a while you remember what happened there.
The way the story is told is so simple and sweet. You feel his loss but are never saddened by it. It's a happy like of feeling that you get with a good memory that you know will never happen again. It's happy but sad at the same time.
All I'm going to say is watch this short film. It's 12 minutes and it's worth every second of it. You just have watch, because it is wonderful. The whole thing is just beautiful.
Next week I'm going to watch Angels Egg.
