A mysterious young girl, who is carrying a large egg, and a soldier meet and reveal secrets to one another. All in the with the back drop of a lonely, beautiful, surrealist, post apocalyptic world, populated only by unresting shadows and an abandoned Victorian Gothic town.
First and foremost this movie is beautiful. The animation and art and gorgeous. The music that it's paired with give the movie a eerie and ominous tone but a beauty to it. There is less than a page of dialog for this whole movie. But, that doesn't hurt it in any way.
It's kind of a weird surrealist take on a biblical story. It's Noah's arc but the dove didn't come back. So the rest of humanity is just living on the over turned arc. There honestly isn't much to say about this movie except that's beautiful and has a wonderful score. Every thing else is weird, odd, and never explained. You have to go into this movie with no exceptions and really no thoughts because once you start thinking about it you just keep thinking about it. Ever single part of the movie is left to be open to interpenetration. One person could take it one way were an other takes it a completely different way. It's enjoyable but if you want a movie with plot and characters. This is not the movie.
It's one of those movies you watch just to watch and enjoy visually. Or, watch it if you want to have a very long discussion about god, the meaning to life, and what the fuck just happened. Watch it with some one else so that you can have that conversation, don't go online and talk to people who "just don't get it", so they hate it.
The thing that was enjoyable was the little girl was still just a little girl. She obviously didn't trust any one because some thing had happened to her. But, she still craved human contact. The soldier gave her contact and comfort that she needed. They needed each other and you can tell that he's hurt at the end after she killed her self, because he might have had to let her go but now he is all alone again.
When she became a grown woman who as pregnant, it was a little odd. It's either that's what she was originally and she just perceives her self as a little girl. Or, by some force she just suddenly grew up. Or, it's some thing completely different. Again this movie is completely open to interpertation.
Watch it if you like older animation and enjoy a good sound track. Also, if you like very odd wierd things, that can't really be explained. visually very beautiful and stunning movie but if you don't want to annualized any thing then don't watch it.
Next week I'm watching Dead Leaves.
