Movie Night- Wolf Children

Hana a college student falls in love with a werewolf, he in never named through out the whole movie only being called daddy or your dad. They get married and have two children together, a daughter, Yuki and a son, Ame. Soon after Ame is born their father is killed hunting  for food for his new born child and mate.
Raising Yuki and Ame alone is hard for Hana. The children often switch between human and wolf forms. She does her best to hide and protect them from the world. After being visited by social workers who are concerned because the children have never been vaccinated, she movies them to the country. She buys a old house that is completely run down.
Hana fixes the house by her self and plants her own vegetables to save money. Not being a farmer she has a lot of trouble. The rest of the inhabitants of village start helping her when they see she is not giving up. Old man Niasaki is the person who told every one to help her out. Even though he is gruff and not genital at all he is extremely kind. He makes it so Hana and the children can live in the mountains and live off the land.
Yuki wants to go to school knowing that other children go to school. After, a long session of complaining Hana agrees to let her go to school. There is one condition though, she must stay in human form the entire time. At school, Yuki first has a hard time fitting in since she isn't afraid of snakes and likes dead bugs and skulls. After deciding to be more girly, she makes many friends.
Ame has trouble at school being much more timid then Yuki. He is bullied and stops going, he joins Hana at the conversation center more often then not. One morning after the first snow, the whole family goes to play in the snow. Ame sees a kingfisher and hunts him successfully but ends up falling in the river. Yuki saves and Hana become extremely scared that she had lost her son. After his almost drowning Ame become more confident. Instead of school, he starts to learn how to be a wolf from an old fox in the woods.
in the sixth grade Yuki's class receives a new transfer student, Souhei. He notices that some thing is different about her. He starts to pressure her about it and this freaks Yuki out. She tries to run away but becomes cornered by him. She get so scared that she transforms and scratches Souhei injuring him. His mother blame Yuki, but Souhei says it was a wolf and not her fault at all. Yuki leaves school for a bit, scared that they will have to move because of her. While she stays home Souhei brings her things such as home work and food. Hana asks him on day if he hates wolf now, he says no of course not. After, this the two become friends.
Ame and Yuki fight over if they are human or wolf. Since, the two of them are going in two completely different directions. Worse and worse rain storms start happening and Ame is worried about the forest and his teacher, who has become hurt and is dying.
One day the storm get so bad that school closes early. Yuki waits for Hana to pick her up, but she has gone after Ame. Ame has gone into the woods to help his teacher. The other children start getting picked up by their perents, Yuki and Souhei end up being left at the school, since they were not in the gym. Yuki tells Souhei her secret changing into a wolf infront of him. He says that he already knows, and he will never tell her secret.
Hana tripped and fell unconscious. Ame finds her and carries her to safety. She awakes and sees Ame transformed into an adult wolf. He then runs into the mountains. She is sad but realizes he has found his own path and that was all she ever wanted for her children. She accepts that he is on his own path and that this is goodbye.
The next year, Yuki leaves home as well moving into a dorm for junior high. Hana stays in the old house were she often hears Ame howling. She is proud of both her children happy she raised them well.

I really liked this movie. The main line through the whole movie is that Hana wants her children to choice their own path. She never wanted to tell them what they should be. Also, through the whole movie Hana is protecting her children. She stops working and going to school. She also movies to an isolated area so that her children will be safer. If that isn't motherly love I don't know what is.
Wolf Children also pulls on your heart strings more then you would have thought. First when Hana is looking for her husband in the rain. How the movie uses sound to convey her shock is great. Then in the end when Ame goes into the woods. The same weather she lost her husband to. The movie uses the same type of sound. You can see the fear of losing an other person she loves on her face when she run into the mountains after him. It is really heart breaking.
The movie does a very good job of showing how time passes with Yuki's voice over and then Yuki and Ame's classes changing. And it's interesting that their personalities change as they grow up.
The thing I liked most about this movie is the adorable wolf babies, also that it sweet and a good heart filled movie.
Next week I'll be doing When Marnie was There.
