GATE Episode 1 Review

The Self Defense Force Goes to an Other World

Yoji is a huge otaku and for the most part animes only portray otakus two ways. One as a complete loser with no back bone or two as a creek out cast. Every once in a while you get the sweet otaku who just doesn't know how to talk to girl. For the most part in all anime otakus are only boys. This anime is different. Yes, Yoji is an otaku and the only reason he has his job is to fund his hobby, but he does not let it consume him.
When we first meet him he is completely submerged in his video game and phone. He is so oblivious to the rest of the world that he even runs right into a pole. When the dragon riders are seen passing him in the window, he doesn't even notice. But, when he does see what is happening, he jumps right into action. He doesn't pause and complain or contemplate if he should do any thing. He knows what his job is and he knows he must do something. On his days off is completely submerges him self into his fantasy world but it is not his life. He know that there is a time and a place for it.
After the attack he really doesn't want any thing to do with his new fame. He just wants to live his life as a member of the Japanese Self Defense Force (JSFD) and enjoy his hobby. But, as time goes by he realizes that he can no longer do that.
Unlike many show or movies that odomadically just go to war after some one attacks the leads home world or country, GATE does not. It takes almost six months for Yoji and the JSFD to go into the other world. It takes the whole episode to do this. It's nice to see some thing change every once in a while with entertainment and anime.
~^.^
